Chapter 10

Knox had to hand it to Gabriella; the woman knew how to make things happen. Max and his grandfather had been dispatched to the hotel to collect Knox’s things, Violet and Mrs. B began compiling a list of everything the older woman could remember about the rubies from her father, and Tucker and Reed worked out a flight strategy.

In the end, it had made more sense to fly commercial; the risks were minimal enough to get him home without dragging a private pilot into the mix. Sam had come through with the ticket for one of Knox’s aliases, and it was quick work to get Gabriella on the same flight.

And if that small spot at the back of his neck itched, he’d live with it until they landed at Heathrow and finished the last few kilometers to his flat.

He flipped off the shower taps and reached for a towel. How had he been talked into this? He knew his training, and he knew his responsibilities.

But he needed help.

It was a bugger of a feeling, but that didn’t make it any less true.

Buchanan and Baldwin had enough training and skills to feel familiar. They didn’t need to share the missions they’d gone on to convey the more obvious fact they had the experience. Graystone was all cop and, from everything Knox had seen, a damn fine one. The man had been shaken by his stepfather’s betrayal, but he was good stock.

And then there was Gabriella.

Fierce, proud, beautiful Gabriella.

She’d disappeared into the workroom/bedroom with Lilah and Cassidy, leaving him to take a long, hot shower and figure out where the hell his life had gone off the rails. It had also given him a few moments by himself to question why he couldn’t stop thinking about her.

She’d surprised him before, with the soccer story. He’d braced himself for a fight—had even attempted to tease one to life with the snide remark about her job—when she flipped the tables on him. A folksy story from her childhood and the not-so-subtle message that she wasn’t going anywhere, and in a matter of minutes she had him dancing to her tune.

And going along with her crazy plan.

He rubbed the steam off the bathroom mirror and leaned forward, inspecting his shoulder. “The madwoman even knows how to stitch up an injury,” he muttered to himself before quickly toweling off his hair.

The steam in the bathroom lingered in a heavy wave and Knox opened the door into Cassidy’s bedroom to air it out. Padding over the aged hardwoods to the fresh set of clothes she’d laid out on the bed, he saw a small note.

Figured you’d like something that didn’t belong to anyone else. These are spares I keep for nervous grooms and drunk groomsmen who end up needing a change of clothes.

Once again, the sheer ingenuity and thoughtfulness of these women struck him. Gabriella’s friends were as efficient as she was, their ability to shift gears and pivot to something new as effortless as breathing.
